Green Tea May Help With Autoimmune Diseases

One of the beneficial compounds found in green tea has an extraordinary ability to increase the number of “regulatory T cells” that play a key role in immune function and suppression of autoimmune diseases, says a new Institute study Linus Pauling Oregon State University.
This may be one of the mechanisms underlying the benefits of green tea, which has attracted strong interest for its ability to help control inflammation, improve immune function and prevent cancer.
The drugs available that perform similar functions and have been the subject of much research, scientists say, but have problems with toxicity. A natural food product could give long-term, sustainable way to achieve the same goal without toxicity, the researchers said.
“This seems a natural compound of plant origin that may affect the number of regulatory T cells, and in the process of improving immune function,” said Emily Ho, principal LPI researcher and associate professor in OSU’s Department of Nutrition and Exercise Sciences.
There are many types of cells have different functions in the immune system, which is a delicate balancing act to attack unwanted invaders without harming normal cells. In autoimmune diseases, which can range from simple allergies under conditions of diabetes or terminals, such as Lou Gehrig’s disease, this process goes wrong and the body attacks itself by mistake.
Some cells exist primarily to help control this problem and dampen or “turn off” the immune system, including regulatory T cells. The role of adequate number and regulatory T cells, in turn, is regulated by other biological processes such as transcription factors and DNA methylation.
In this study, the OSU scientists conducted experiments with a compound in green tea called EGCG a polyphenol, which is believed to be responsible for much of its health benefits and are features of anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory . They found that could cause an increased production of regulatory T cells. Its effects were not as powerful as some of those produced by prescription drugs, but there were some concerns about the long-term use or toxicity.
“EGCG may have health benefits through an epigenetic mechanism, ie we are not changing the underlying DNA code, but only influence what is expressed, which the cells are activated,” said Ho. “And maybe we can do this with a simple approach, whole foods.”
Laboratory studies with mice, Ho said, showed that treatment with EGCG significantly increased the number and frequency of regulatory T cells found in the notes of the spleen and lymph nodes, and in the process helped control immune response.
“Epigenetic regulation can potentially be exploited in the generation of suppressive regulatory T cells for therapeutic purposes, and is of great clinical importance for the Suppression of autoimmune disease,” researchers said in their study.
The research was conducted by scientists at OSU, the University of Connecticut, and Changwon National University in South Korea. The work was supported by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and the Oregon Agricultural Experiment Station.
Therapeutic Benefits of Green Tea (II)
Monks Chinese green tea called divine elixir of life, because infusion not only kept them awake and focused during long hours of meditation, also served to try to prevent a wide range of ailments. Numerous studies around the world, both in humans and animals under laboratory conditions have shown that people who drink daily at least three cups of green tea can enjoy not only a delightful ritual, but also a virtuoso medicine the following properties. We are seeing more therapeutic benefits of green tea.
Protector Cardiovascular catechin intake is beneficial for reducing ischemic disorders (narrowing of the arteries that causes a reduction in the amount of blood and oxygen to the heart). Its effectiveness antithrombotic (prevents and dissolves blood clots in the blood)-similar to that of aspirin, reduces the risk of heart disease. It also helps lower blood pressure.
Regulator of cholesterol: lipid, ie, capable of reducing levels of LDL (bad) and plasma triglycerides, while increasing levels of HDL, the good cholesterol.
Ally immune defenses: By preventing free radicals destroy healthy cells and inhibiting the production of certain enzymes harmful to the body, green tea strengthens and underpins the immune system.
Regulatory body weight: As the red tea, green tea has a diuretic effect and acts as a powerful debugger, which helps eliminate toxins from the body. Moreover, its components inhibit the adhesion of liquids (fat) tissue and its absorption in the digestive tract and, in turn, stimulates direct elimination through fecal matter.

Hypoglycemic: Helps metabolize carbohydrates and lower blood sugar levels, so it is suitable for diabetics.
Antitumor: Research has shown the properties of green tea in the prevention of lung cancer, esophagus, pancreas, liver, breast, prostate, skin, mouth and colon. In a publication of the journal Nature in 2009, researcher J. Jankun, Faculty of Medicine, Ohio, USA, verify that the catechin EGCg can inhibit the activity of urokinase, an enzyme essential for the spread and cause tumor metastasis. In addition, it was found that EGCG does not cause harmful side effects.
Lung Healer: The Japanese population, where people come to take up to six cups of green tea a day have one of the highest rates of smoking, however, the incidence of lung cancer is one of the lowest in the developed world . Furthermore, green tea (green tea) is an excellent bronchodilator.
Natural rejuvenator: For its antioxidant power, many cosmetics and even food include it in extract form. Stops the aging process, preventing wrinkles and hair loss.
